What are Cerebral Vascular Malformations and what are their symptoms?

Cerebral Vascular Malformations are a collection of abnormally growing blood vessels, usually in the form of a nest or ball, that form in the brain.

Most of these malformations are asymptomatic so they are only detected in a brain scan (a CT scan, an MRI or an arteriogram) or after a brain haemorrhage although they can sometimes cause headaches, weakness, confusion…

There are several possible treatments depending on the severity of the condition.

Surgical removal (for larger malformations)

Embolisation (for medium-sized malformations or in preparation for surgical excision)

Stereotactic/stereotactic radiosurgery (for small malformations and difficult access)

What are the treatments?

Stereotactic/stereotactic radiosurgery is performed by means of different systems such as the Gamma Knife or Cyberknife and consists of applying ionising radiation to the lesion in order to eliminate it. This treatment may require between 2 and 7 hours depending on the system used.

By means of endovascular embolisation, the blood flow of the malformation is cut off by means of a catheter inserted through the femoral vein to the malformation in the brain, through which a product is “injected” to seal the vessel.

As for surgical removal, the brain malformation is resected through a craniotomy.

Depending on the complexity of the malformation, the surgery can last 5 or 6 hours and is performed under general anaesthetic.

After undergoing surgery, you will spend one night in the ICU, after which you will be taken up to the ward, where you will remain for approximately 5 days.

What is the result of the treatment?

The result in all cases is the elimination of the malformation, avoiding major problems such as hemorrhages or brain injury.

What recovery time do I need in Spain?

The recovery time in Spain will depend on the type of treatment you undergo but can range from three weeks to six weeks.

Before treatment

Check that you have prepared all the personal documentation (credit card, cash, passport, Identity Card…), medical (reports, prescriptions, images…) and travel (confirmation of accommodation booking, travel tickets…).
If you take medication of any kind not related to the surgery, do not forget to take with you the necessary amount for your stay in Spain, as well as the medical prescription that will allow you to travel with it without problems.

During treatment

Once you are in Spain, you will have to make an appointment with your specialist. During this visit, the doctor will open your medical record (for which you will be asked to provide all your medical documentation), perform a physical examination and tell you if any further tests are needed to confirm the diagnosis.
If it is not necessary and everything is confirmed, your doctor will tell you when you must go to the preoperative study and will confirm the time of admission for the day of your surgery.
If the surgeon has told you to stop taking any medication a few days before the surgery, such as anticoagulants, please do not forget to follow the exact instructions given by the doctor or you will not be able to have the operation! The same goes for any fasting that the doctor indicates, if you do not comply – You will not be able to have the surgery either.

After treatment

The length of time you will have to wait to return to your daily activities will depend on the treatment you have undergone, your neurosurgeon will give you the guidelines to follow at the time of discharge.
Remember that your recovery time will vary depending on your age, your physical condition, your lifestyle habits and your attitude.
