    Treatment characteristics

Brain lobectomy is a surgery that is performed for patients who have a lesion or tumor on the brain.

A brain lobectomy is the removal of one of the lobes (portion) of the brain in order to remove a tumor or serious injury.

This procedure can take between 3 to 5 hours. It is performed under general anaesthesia although sometimes it is necessary to start with conscious sedation as, in order to minimise the area to be removed and avoid injury, the team may require you to be awake to ask you questions or ask you to make a specific movement… It will depend on the lobe being operated on.

After the surgery you will be transferred to the ICU where you will spend the first night, then you will be taken to the ward where you will stay for 5 or 6 days.

The length of your stay in Spain will depend on the extent of the lesion to be removed. Additionally, you may require some form of neurorehabilitation which would extend your stay.

Your medical team will advise you personally but you should expect to remain for a minimum of 3 weeks. Please be aware that complete healing of the bone may take up to 12 months.

If you undergo this type of surgery you will have to stay in Spain until the birth of your baby.

    • Check that you have prepared all the personal documentation (credit card, cash, passport, Identity Card…), medical (reports, prescriptions, images…) and travel (confirmation of accommodation booking, travel tickets…).
    • If you take medication of any kind not related to the surgery, do not forget to take with you the necessary amount for your stay in Spain, as well as the medical prescription that will allow you to travel with it without problems.

    During treatment

    • Once you are in Spain, you will have to make an appointment with your specialist. During this visit, the doctor will open your medical record, perform a physical examination and tell you if any further tests are needed to confirm the diagnosis.
    • If it is not necessary and everything is confirmed, your doctor will tell you when you must go to the preoperative study and will confirm the time of admission for the day of your surgery.
    • If the surgeon has told you to stop taking any medication a few days before the surgery, such as anticoagulants, please do not forget to follow the exact instructions given by the doctor or you will not be able to have the operation!.

    • The same goes for any fasting that the doctor indicates, if you do not comply – You will not be able to have the surgery either.

    After treatment

    • For approximately 4 to 6 weeks after surgery, you should walk for short periods of time. You should not lift any weight, strain or bend your body (as if you were bending over to pick something up), as this puts pressure on your head.
    • It is recommended to sleep with the head in an elevated position, avoid products such as dyes and do not apply heat.
    • Please make sure to strictly follow the guidelines given by your neurosurgeon to ensure your successful recovery.
    • Remember that your recovery time will vary depending on your age, your physical condition, your lifestyle habits and your attitude.
    • Keep in mind that your successful recovery also depends on you!
