Treatment characteristics

This procedure is intended for women who want (or need) to postpone motherhood. It is also used to preserve “extra” embryos after an IVF treatment in case of a new attempt.

This treatment is recommended in cases where there is no apparent cause that prevents conception or if the male partner has some type of hereditary disease that he does not want to transmit to his offspring or if one wants to be a mother without a male partner.

How is the treatment performed?

The treatment consists of freezing the oocytes using an ultra-fast freezing technique (up to 23,000ºC/min, as compared to 0.3ºC/min in slow freezing) with cryoprotectants. After freezing, they are kept in watertight containers of liquid nitrogen.

In order to obtain the oocytes, an ovarian puncture will be performed. This is a minor intervention that is performed under sedation and usually requires less than 20 minutes.

Using an ultrasound machine with a needle, the puncture is performed to aspirate the follicular fluid. Then, the oocytes will be extracted and vitrified in the laboratory.

What is the result of the treatment?

The result is the preservation of the oocytes in time for their intended use.

What time do I need in Spain?

You will only need to stay in Spain for a few days. The treatment is usually done for a few hours and does not normally involve any complications. It requires a day of rest and it is advisable to wait for a few days before returning to your country.

Treatment itinerary

Before treatment

An initial consultation with the clinic is very important to inform you of all your options. The first consultation can be arranged via video conference.
Check that you have prepared all the personal documentation (credit card, cash, passport, Identity Card…), medical (reports, prescriptions, images…) and travel (confirmation of accommodation booking, travel tickets…).
If you take medication of any kind not related to the surgery, do not forget to take with you the necessary amount for your stay in Spain, as well as the medical prescription that will allow you to travel with it without problems.

During treatment

Prior to your arrival in Spain, your doctor will have already informed you of the medication you should have been taking in preparation for your treatment. Your appointments for the egg retrieval and their transfer will be scheduled, the date for the start of your treatment will also be set.
If the doctor has advised you to stop taking any medication a few days before the treatment, such as anticoagulants, please do not forget to follow the exact instructions given by the doctor or you will not be able to have the treatment!.
The same goes for any fasting that the doctor indicates, if you do not comply – You will not be able to have the surgery either.

After treatment

After the treatment, you will be able to return to your normal daily routine but it is recommended that you rest for a day.
You must strictly follow the instructions given by the doctor.
