Lasik Laser Refractive Surgery in Spain

The Lasik technique is a laser surgery procedure used to eliminate or minimise dependence on glasses or contact lenses in the case of myopia, hyperopia and/or astigmatism.
It is performed in just three steps: First, a thin layer of corneal tissue similar to a contact lens is lifted, then the laser is applied and finally the layer of tissue is repositioned without the need for stitches.

In Spain, the correction of refractive problems using the Lasik technique is a simple, fast, safe, painless and personalised procedure.

The surgical procedure takes only 10-15 minutes and is performed under local anaesthesia of the surface of the eye. It can be performed on both eyes in a single session.

Who is this kind of treatment for?

This type of surgery is recommended for patients who want to stop using glasses or contact lenses as a way to correct their vision. It is suitable for between 1 and 10 dioptres of myopia and between 1 and 5 dioptres of hyperopia.

How is the treatment performed?

This procedure is usually performed with topical anaesthesia to numb the eye and usually requires 15-20 minutes.

The intervention consists of:

A suction ring is placed on the eye

With the use of a laser, a thin flap is created to access the cornea.

The corneal disc is then removed and another laser is used to correct the defect.

The eye is cleaned and the disc is replaced. A few drops of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory are given.

About ten minutes after the operation, the doctor will give you the necessary guidelines to assist your recovery and after care at home.

What is the result of the treatment?

At first, your vision will probably be hazy or blurry. But in a few hours, your vision will improve. And in a few weeks, you will be able to see properly without having to wear your glasses again.

What recovery time do I need in Spain?

If you are able to stay in Spain for the entire recovery process, you should stay here for about 5 weeks to fully recover. But if you have to return to your country earlier, you can do so 15 days after the intervention. You must always strictly follow the instructions given by the doctor.

For a few weeks, expect some visual disturbances. You should consider them normal.

Decreased visual capacity in poor lighting conditions.

Halos or starburst around lights.

Slight changes in your visual acuity during the recovery period (5 weeks).

In two months at most (time in which the healing process is totally stabilised), we will carry out a refraction test and assess (if any) ways to correct your residual refractive error. If glasses or contact lenses are necessary, the prescription will be low power and you will probably only need them occasionally or for specific activities. If the residual refractive error is a concern for you, your ophthalmologist will inform you of the surgical possibilities to correct it.

Before treatment

Check that you have prepared all the personal documentation (credit card, cash, passport, Identity Card…), medical (reports, prescriptions, images…) and travel (confirmation of accommodation booking, travel tickets…).
If you take medication of any kind not related to the surgery, do not forget to take with you the necessary amount for your stay in Spain, as well as the medical prescription that will allow you to travel with it without problems.

During treatment

Once you are in Spain, you will have to make an appointment with your specialist. During this visit, the doctor will open your medical perform a physical examination and tell you if any further tests are needed to confirm the diagnosis.
If it is not necessary and everything is confirmed, your doctor will tell you when you must go to the preoperative study and will confirm the time of admission for the day of your surgery.
If the surgeon has told you to stop taking any medication a few days before the surgery, such as anticoagulants, please do not forget to follow the exact instructions given by the doctor or you will not be able to have the operation!

After treatment

After LASIK surgery, the use of sunglasses is recommended and you should avoid sleeping face-down for at least 5 days.
You should not rub your eyes or wear makeup for the first month and maintain proper hygiene.
You should strictly follow the instructions given by your doctor.
