Tonsillectomy with/without Adenoidectomy in Spain

This procedure is performed in the operating room with the patient asleep (general anesthetic).

In young children, the child is allowed to breathe anesthetic gas out of a mask until they fall asleep (this usually takes less than 30 seconds), then an IV catheter is placed and a breathing tube is placed in the throat. Some sedation is sometimes given prior to going to the operating room if the child has a lot of anxiety or will not easily separate from the parents.

In older children, the IV catheter may be placed prior to the child going to sleep at the discretion of the anesthesiologist. A member of the anesthesia department administers all anesthetics, and all of the routine monitoring equipment is used to assure safety.

    Treatment characteristics

This type of intervention is suitable for those patients who have recurrent tonsillitis, overly large tonsils or who have sleep disorders due to respiratory failure caused by the tonsils.

This procedure is normally performed under general anaesthesia and usually requires between 30 and 60 minutes.

    The surgery consists of;

    – Cutting the tonsils (and adenoids if required) with a scalpel or with a radiofrequency device.

    – If it is done with scalpel, pressure is applied to the wounds and sutured with absorbable stitches.

    – If it is done with radiofrequency, the waves that resect the tonsils (and/or adenoids) close the wound itself.

After their stay time in the recovery room, your child will be taken to a room where they will remain for a few hours, to allow for  recovery and where you will be given the necessary guidelines with regards to after care.

After two weeks you will notice the improvement in your child’s breathing, their apneas will disappear and they will have no difficulty swallowing.

Since this is an outpatient treatment (which does not require admission) you are advised to stay in Spain for one or two weeks to achieve full recovery.

    Treatment itinerary

    Before treatment

    • Check that you have prepared all the personal documentation (credit card, cash, passport, Identity Card…), medical (reports, prescriptions, images…) and travel (confirmation of accommodation booking, travel tickets…).
    • If you take medication of any kind not related to the surgery, do not forget to take with you the necessary amount for your stay in Spain, as well as the medical prescription that will allow you to travel with it without problems.

    During treatment

    • Once in Spain, you will have to make an appointment with the specialist. During this visit, the doctor will open your child’s medical record (for which you will be asked to provide all your medical documentation), perform a physical examination and tell you if any further tests are needed to confirm the diagnosis.
    • If it is not necessary and everything is confirmed, the doctor will tell you when you must bring your child for the preoperative study and will confirm the time of admission for the day of surgery.
    • The doctor will give you the feeding guidelines your child should follow before surgery.

    After treatment

    • After treatment, the patient will have to rest for the first week and avoid places where there is a risk of infection. The wound will close by itself in a week or two.
    • You will need to follow the instructions given by the doctor in full.
    • Remember that recovery time will vary depending on age, physical condition, lifestyle habits, and attitude.
    • Keep in mind that successful recovery also depends on you!
