    Treatment characteristics

Those suffering from tumours in the pancreas and require the affected area to be resected or for the organ to be removed completely.

There are different types of surgery to try to remove or contain a pancreatic cancer.

Depending on the location and size of the tumour, the following surgery may be performed

Whipple (duodenopancreatectomy); The head of the pancreas is removed leaving enough of the organ to function properly. Parts of other nearby organs are also removed.

Distal pancreatectomy -The tail of the pancreas and part of the body is removed (by open surgery, laparoscopy, or DaVinci robot). Depending on the metastasis of the cancer, the spleen may be removed.

Total pancreatectomy (by open surgery, laparoscopy, or DaVinci robot); The pancreas and some of the organs to which it has spread (spleen, small intestine, stomach, etc.) are completely removed.

All surgeries are performed under general anaesthetic and usually take between 2 to 5 hours. After surgery you may spend some nights in the ICU to be monitored; then you will stay on the ward for 4 to 10 days, depending on the type of surgery and the technique used.

When you are discharged, you will be given guidelines to follow in order to continue recovering from the surgery.

The primary goal is to completely eradicate the cancer, but sometimes surgeries can be performed in a palliative manner.
